As you’re probably aware, Microsoft have reached end of life for Windows XP and have discontinued support for the operating system.

As such they have ceased downloads from the Microsoft website for Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows XP.

Not only that, but the last release (4.5.216.0) of Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows XP was bundled with nag screens which left the castle icon red and displayed notices each time your computer starts up.

The solution is to get the previous version of Microsoft Security Essentials curtsey of the

Internet archive project:

Don’t worry about downloading from another source either, archive.org takes pride in archiving the Internet and you can rest assured that it is an exact copy of the file that was once available directly from Microsoft’s very own website.
